Federal Election Energy Policies

federal election energy policy

The Federal Election is upon us, so let’s take a look at what we know about the two major parties’ energy offers. Australians have made it clear they want cheaper gas and electric bills, more reliable power, and many want a push toward renewables. So how does the federal election energy policy stack up?

Liberal Federal Election Energy Policy

Scott Morrison’s Coalition has spread its focus over several areas of interest. In some ways, they have the upper hand because they’ve been in government for some time, and their energy agenda is already in full swing. The questions is, are voters are happy with their work?

For affordability, they’ve announced an Energy Assistance Payment. This is a one-off payment of $75 for singles and $125 for couples. While it isn’t for everyone, eligible people include veterans, carers, single parents and other pensioners.

When it comes to new energy projects, under their energy policy, aimed at boosting reliability and decreasing power bills, the Morrison government has back a range of renewable and coal-generated ventures. As far as emissions go, Morrison is sticking with a goal of a 26% reduction by 2030.

Labor’s Federal Election Energy Policy

Labor have focused their campaign heavy on climate change, reducing carbon emissions and lowering household bills as part of their energy policy.

Bill Shorten’s team wants Australia to generate half of its power from renewables by 2030. By doubling funding to the Clean Energy Finance Corporation, Labor aims to support new renewable energy generation and storage. He’s also offered to subsidise solar battery installation for 100,000 households. Furthermore, he wants Australia to have a million solar batteries by 2025.

Labor has also ruled out funding any new coal-fired power stations but has offered $5 billion to upgrade the nations transmission network to increase the reliability of power.
